A number of WW1 French and Belgian artists, including Marcel Augis, trod the battlefields of the Western Front during 1914-1918. They recorded the devastation and the areas containing Allied troops. Many of these etchings/aquatints were sold to soldiers returning home after the war or subsequently purchased on the many battlefield remembrance tours which took place in the 1920s and 1930s. EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and evocative work by Marcel Augis, a French artist who went by the pseudonym H. Dupont during World War I. This hauntingly beautiful aquatint captures the ruins of the Eglise St. Vincent in Rouen, France, during the war years of 1914-1918. The Western Front was a battleground like no other, and Augis, along with other artists such as Paul Nash and William Orpen, bravely ventured into the devastated landscape to document the war's impact on the land and its people. The etchings and aquatints created during this time served as powerful reminders of the war's destruction and became cherished mementos for soldiers returning home and for those who visited the battlefields on remembrance tours in the 1920s and 1930s. The Eglise St. Vincent, a topographical and historical building of great significance in Rouen, was one of the many structures that bore the brunt of the war's destruction. The church, which dates back to the 15th century, is depicted in Augis' work as a shell-damaged ruin, its once-majestic spire reduced to rubble. The image is a poignant reminder of the war's devastating impact on the cultural and historical heritage of France and Belgium. Augis' work, like that of other wartime artists, offers a unique perspective on the war and its aftermath. It invites us to reflect on the past and to remember the sacrifices made during this pivotal period in history. "Eglise St. Vincent, Rouen, 1917" is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of art to capture and preserve the past.
