Como, Italy - The Cathedral and Belfry (November 18, 1898)
EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the breathtaking beauty of Como, Italy's most iconic landmarks: the Cathedral and Belfry. Taken in November 1898 by the skilled photographer Manuel Wielandt, this image transports us back in time to the late 19th century. The Cathedral of Como, also known as Duomo di Como, is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. Its intricate facade is adorned with elaborate carvings, vibrant frescoes, and ornate columns. The Cathedral's twin towers, which house the bells, rise majestically towards the sky, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The Belfry, or Campanile, is a separate structure located next to the Cathedral. It was built in the 14th century and stands at a height of 102 meters (335 feet). The Belfry's clock face, visible in this photograph, is a testament to the precision and craftsmanship of the time. The peaceful scene is further enhanced by the absence of modern distractions. Horse-drawn carriages and people in traditional Italian attire can be seen on the cobblestone streets, adding to the authenticity of the image. The lake, which reflects the beauty of the Cathedral and Belfry, adds a tranquil element to the photograph. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the past, offering us a glimpse of Como as it was over a century ago. The Cathedral and Belfry continue to be major tourist attractions in Como, drawing visitors from all corners of the world. This image is a reminder of the enduring beauty and charm of this Italian town and its rich history.
