EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemn and atmospheric scene of the unveiling of the Canadian National War Memorial at Vimy Ridge on July 26, 1936. King Edward VIII, then the Prince of Wales, stands before the memorial as the crowd looks on in silence and reverence. The memorial, designed by Canadian sculptor Walter Allward, is a tribute to the heroic men who fell in the Great War, also known as World War I. The memorial, which is the largest war memorial in Canada, is a masterpiece of design and artwork, featuring a central figure of a grieving mother and various allegorical figures representing peace, victory, and sacrifice. The memorial was erected on the anniversary of the successful Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place in 1917 and is considered a significant moment in Canadian military history. The 1930s, or the '30s, was a time of reflection and commemoration for the sacrifices made during the war, and this photograph encapsulates the somber and poignant atmosphere of the occasion.
