Bevelled wood effect frame, card mounted, 15x10 archival quality photo print. Overall outside dimensions 21x16 inches (54x41cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the White Morpho, Morpho laertes, also known as the Laertes butterfly or Papilio laertes. The illustration was meticulously drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder and published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in London, 1802. The White Morpho is a large, striking butterfly native to Central and South America. Its wingspan can reach up to 12 centimeters, and its wings are adorned with large, black borders and intricate white patterns. The underside of the wings is a pale yellow color, with a few small black spots. The White Morpho is known for its distinctive flight pattern, which involves the butterfly flying with its wings closed, creating a loud, hissing sound as the wings beat against each other. This sound is produced by the scales on the edges of the wings, which contain a chemical that creates a vibration when disturbed. The White Morpho plays an important role in the ecosystem as a pollinator, particularly for plants in the family Apocynaceae. Its larvae feed on the leaves of various host plants, including passionflowers and milkweeds. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the natural history artistry of the early 19th century and provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of over 200 years ago.
