EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time from the Needlework Class at Queen Alexandria's Royal Technical Schools in Sandringham, Norfolk, in 1910. The image beautifully portrays a group of young women and girls intently focused on their needlework projects, surrounded by an inviting and well-lit room filled with tables laden with sewing supplies. The Royal Technical Schools, established in 1872, were designed to provide education and training for women in various practical skills, including needlework, cooking, and domestic science. Queen Alexandria, who was the wife of King Edward VII at the time, became the schools' patroness in 1893, and the name was changed to reflect her involvement. In this photograph, the students are seen diligently working on their projects, some with determined expressions, while others chat with their neighbors, creating a sense of camaraderie and community. The room's warm, natural light filters in through the windows, casting a gentle glow over the scene, and the tables are neatly arranged with sewing machines, baskets of fabric, and piles of thread and needles. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the students at Queen Alexandria's Royal Technical Schools, providing a window into the importance of education and skill-building for women during the early 1900s. The needlework class at Sandringham, Norfolk, stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of these young women and girls, who were learning valuable skills that would serve them well in their future lives.
