EDITORS COMMENTS
King Louis XVI of France, dressed in the fashion of 1776, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Charles Breton. The King is shown wearing the grand costume of the time, complete with a voluminous red velvet robe and a white linen shirt. The sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit, an esteemed and ancient order of chivalry, is draped over his left shoulder, adding an air of regal sophistication to the image. King Louis XVI, born in 1754, ruled France from 1774 until his execution in 1793 during the French Revolution. This portrait, which originated from the Versailles Palace, is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy during the late 18th century. The intricate details of the King's costume are beautifully captured in this lithograph, with the rich textures and vibrant colors bringing the image to life. The red velvet robe, adorned with gold braid and embroidery, is a symbol of the King's power and wealth, while the white linen shirt and ruff collar add a touch of elegance and refinement. The sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit, which is prominently displayed in the image, is a symbol of the King's religious devotion and commitment to the protection of the Catholic faith. The oblong crosses and fleurs-de-lis embroidered on the sash add an ornate and decorative touch to the costume. This handcoloured lithograph, which was created by Charles Breton after a portrait in Versailles, is a valuable historical document that provides a glimpse into the fashion and culture of the French monarchy during the late 18th century. It is a reminder of the grandeur and opulence of the French court, as well as the significance of the Order of the Holy Spirit in French history.
