The End of a Dramatic Chase: Inspector Walter Dew Leaves the SS Laurentic This historic photograph captures the moment Inspector Walter Dew, a renowned Scottish detective, leaves the ocean liner SS Laurentic as he embarks on the next leg of his dramatic pursuit. Having received a tip that notorious criminal couple Dr. Hawley Crippen and Ethel Le Neve were aboard the SS Montrose, bound for Quebec from Antwerp, Dew took the faster SS Laurentic to intercept them at the St. Lawrence River. The year was 1910, and the case of Dr. Crippen, a suspected murderer, had gripped the world. With the help of a telegraph operator, Dew had learned of the couple's departure from Europe and set out to bring them to justice. In this image, Dew is seen stepping onto the pilot steamer that would take him to the SS Montrose. The tension in his expression and the determined set of his jaw speak volumes about the importance of this moment in his career. The waters around him churn with the wake of the ships, adding to the sense of urgency and excitement.
