EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intense moment of an exorcism performed by the renowned healer Johann Georg Gassner (1727-1779) on his subject Emilie at Ellwagen, Germany, around 1770. Gassner, a contemporary of Mesmer and a leading figure in the field of paranormal healing, was known for his unique methods that combined elements of hypnosis, magnetism, and exorcism. In this scene, Gassner, dressed in the traditional attire of a healer, stands over Emilian, a young woman lying on a bed, her eyes wide with fear or trance. The room is filled with animals, believed to possess healing properties, and various tools used in Gassner's practices, such as magnets and crucifixes. The atmosphere is charged with an otherworldly energy, as Gassner focuses intently on his subject, his hands raised in a gesture of blessing or exorcism. The exact nature of Emilie's affliction is unknown, but it is said that she was possessed by evil spirits that caused her great suffering. Gassner, with his deep belief in the power of the supernatural, was determined to help her, using his unique abilities to perform an exorcism and free her from the torment. This photograph, an altered print from the original painting by an unknown artist, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the boundaries between the natural and supernatural worlds were less clearly defined, and healers like Gassner held great power and mystery. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and often controversial history of healing practices and the enduring human desire to seek relief from suffering, no matter how unconventional the means.
