EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph print depicts Cardinal John Fisher (1469-1535), an English prelate and Bishop of Rochester, during a significant period in English history. Born in Beverley, Yorkshire, Fisher rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a trusted advisor to King Henry VII and later serving as Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII. Fisher's unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to acknowledge King Henry VIII as the Supreme Head of the Church of England led to his arrest and eventual execution during the English Reformation. Fisher's steadfastness in the face of persecution earned him a place among the 39 Martyrs of England and Wales, canonized as saints by the Catholic Church in 1970. This photograph captures the solemn and resolute expression of Cardinal Fisher, reflecting the weight of his convictions and the trials he faced. The image is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this English cardinal and bishop, whose life and legacy continue to inspire faith and courage in the face of adversity." Mary Evans Picture Library's photograph print of Cardinal John Fisher offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of religious upheaval and political intrigue. The image invites us to reflect on the life and legacy of this remarkable English prelate, whose unwavering commitment to his faith and unyielding courage continue to resonate with us today.
