EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment during the early stages of World War Two, as members of the Divisional Guard of the 2nd Armoured Division prepare for duty. The line of armed men, wearing tin helmets and carrying their kit, stand at attention, demonstrating their readiness to respond to any threat. This image is taken from an album containing 328 photographs, compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, of the 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), between 1938 and 1940. Major Sale served with distinction during this period, earning the Military Cross for his bravery in action. The album provides a unique insight into the daily life and training of the soldiers during this time, as they prepared for the battles that lay ahead. The photograph is dated to 1940, a year that saw the beginning of major military campaigns in Europe, as the Allied forces sought to repel the advancing German forces. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and the crucial role they played in the defense of their country during a pivotal moment in history.
