SEM of rod & cone cell of the retina

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of rod and cone cells of the eye retina. Cone cells (blue) and more numerous rod cells (pink, purple) are specialized light-sensitive cells. They occur on the surface of the retina. They are responsible for detecting visible images, which are transmit- ted as nerve impulses to the optic nerve and the brain. There are about 130 million rod cells in the human retina; they detect light intensity and so are important for day and night vision. While the less numerous cone-like cone cells (about 6.5 million in the human retina) respond specifically to colour. Magnification: x730 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1120 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of rod and cone cells found in the retina of our eyes. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph, we can observe the specialized light-sensitive cells that play a crucial role in our visual sense. The blue-hued cone cells, although fewer in number (approximately 6.5 million), are responsible for perceiving colors with great precision. On the other hand, the more abundant pink and purple rod cells (around 130 million) excel at detecting variations in light intensity, making them essential for both day and night vision. The surface of the retina is adorned with these remarkable cells, which transmit nerve impulses to the optic nerve and eventually to our brain, enabling us to perceive visible images. This magnified image reveals their delicate structures with astonishing clarity; it was captured using a scanning electron microscope at a staggering magnification of x730 for a 6x7cm size or x1120 for a 4x5 inch size. As we marvel at this microscopic view into our own anatomy, let us appreciate how these tiny but mighty rods and cones work together harmoniously to provide us with one of our most precious senses – sight. This awe-inspiring photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library, showcasing their expertise in capturing visually stunning scientific subjects without mentioning any commercial use intentions.
