EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at the corner of Rue Rosette in Alexandria, Egypt, circa 1910. At the heart of the image is a local chemist, his shop nestled between the narrow walls of the buildings that line the street. The chemist, dressed in traditional Egyptian attire, is engrossed in his work, oblivious to the hustle and bustle of the lively scene unfolding around him. The vibrant colors of the sign above his shop, advertising a range of medicinal remedies and elixirs, add a pop of contrast against the muted tones of the surrounding architecture. Pedestrians, both Egyptian and European, can be seen meandering along the cobblestone street, their faces a mix of curiosity and purpose. The sound of horse-drawn carriages and the aroma of spices and fresh bread wafting through the air create a sensory experience that transports us back in time. The chemist's shop was likely a vital part of the community, providing essential medicines and remedies to the residents of Alexandria. The presence of both Egyptian and European pedestrians underscores the rich cultural diversity of the city during this period. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of a bustling Egyptian city during the 1910s, a time of transformation and change in the region. The corner of Rue Rosette in Alexandria remains a fascinating and intriguing part of Egypt's history, and this photograph serves as a reminder of the vibrant and complex urban environments that once thrived in this beautiful and historic city.
