EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a line of Shorts Type 45 biplanes of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) are parked at Farnborough, England, in 1913. The Shorts Tractor Biplane Type 45 was a significant development in British military aviation, and this image offers a fascinating glimpse into its early history. The RFC, the air arm of the British Army, was expanding rapidly at the time, and the demand for modern and reliable aircraft was immense. The Shorts Type 45, also known as the S.45 or Type 45 Shorts Biplane, was a response to this need. Designed and built by the Short Brothers at their factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the Type 45 was a tractor biplane, meaning that the engine was mounted in front of the wings, driving a propeller that pulled the aircraft forward. This particular photograph shows several Type 45 biplanes parked at Farnborough, a site that was then used as a testing and evaluation center for new military aircraft. The aircraft are arranged in a neat row, their wings folded and their engines turned off, giving the scene a still and orderly appearance. The pilots and ground crew can be seen in the foreground, engaged in their daily routines of maintenance and preparation. The Type 45 biplanes were used extensively by the RFC, with No. 424 Squadron based at Upavon in Wiltshire being one of the units to operate the type. The biplanes were versatile and capable, and saw service in both reconnaissance and training roles. This photograph captures a moment in time when the future of military aviation was being shaped, and the Shorts Type 45 was playing a crucial role in that process.
