EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century print, titled "St Gregory Reluctant Accept Election Bishop Rome" showcases the exquisite talent of French artist Carle Charles André Vanloo. Measuring 7 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches (194 x 139 cm), this artwork is a testament to Vanloo's mastery of pen, brown ink, brush, brown and gray washes, heightened with white and traces of graphite. The scene depicted in this print portrays St. Gregory the Great hesitantly accepting his election as Bishop of Rome. Vanloo skillfully captures the internal struggle within St. Gregory's expression, conveying his reluctance to take on such a significant role. Carle Vanloo was a renowned French artist born in Nice in 1705 and passed away in Paris in 1765. His long-time friend and biographer Michel François Dandre Bardon described him as an exceptional painter with an impeccable attention to detail. One of Vanloo's most prestigious commissions was for the vault of the Church Saint Louis des Invalides in 1762. This particular artwork exemplifies his ability to bring historical figures to life through intricate details and emotional depth. The Liszt Collection presents this remarkable print by Artokoloro, showcasing not only Carle Charles André Vanloo's artistic brilliance but also providing viewers with a glimpse into one of history's pivotal moments – St. Gregory reluctantly accepting his election as Bishop of Rome.
