Böcklin's self-portrait showcases his incredible talent as he masterfully captures his own likeness with oil paint on this unique medium. The rich tones and intricate details bring the portrait to life, revealing the artist's introspective gaze and profound expression. Born in Basel in 1827, Böcklin was a prominent Swiss symbolist painter who gained international recognition for his imaginative landscapes and mythological subjects. His works often explored themes of mortality, dreams, and melancholy. The setting of this particular self-portrait remains undisclosed; however, it exudes an air of elegance and sophistication that suggests a serene environment.
