EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating flood that occurred in the year 1682. Titled "Flood in the Year 1682" it depicts a scene of chaos and desperation as sandbags are being used to fill a hole in a breached dike of Westkapelle, desperately attempting to close it off. The print, marked on the upper right corner with fol. 106, showcases the remarkable etching skills of Jan Luyken, who is mentioned as its creator. The image transports us back to this historic event, showcasing the destructive power of nature and highlighting humanity's resilience in times of crisis. The delicate paper and intricate details captured through etching bring an air of authenticity to this piece. As we gaze upon this artwork from the Liszt Collection, we can't help but marvel at how far we have come since that fateful day in 1682 when lives were forever changed by this catastrophic flood. It serves as a reminder that even amidst tragedy, there is hope and determination to rebuild what was lost
