EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork titled "Crucifixion ca 1400" by an unknown German artist known as the Master of the Berswordt Altar. Created around the year 1400, this masterpiece is a remarkable example of panel painting during that era. The artwork, measuring approximately 23 1/2 x 17 inches (597 x 432 cm), was created using oil and egg tempera on plywood transferred wood. The use of gold accents adds a touch of opulence to this religious scene depicting Christ's crucifixion. Part of a larger altarpiece located in Neustädter Marienkirche in Bielefeld, Westphalia, this particular panel forms part of an extensive narrative cycle consisting of thirty scenes. The entire altarpiece would have been a focal point for worshipers attending church services. During its creation, panel painting underwent a qualitative revolution thanks to influential artists such as Jan van Eyck, Robert Campin, and Rogier van der Weyden. Their works achieved a new sense of realism that can be seen in this piece by the Master of the Berswordt Altar. This print allows us to appreciate and admire the intricate details and skillful technique employed by this German artist from over six centuries ago. It serves as both an artistic treasure and historical artifact that continues to inspire awe and fascination today.
