EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a delightful composition of culinary delights. In this image, we are presented with an exquisite arrangement featuring a crayfish, squid, large crayfish, onion-like vegetable, and parsley. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every element captured by the artist. The inclusion of perselie adds a touch of cultural significance to this artwork. Historically, it was one of the seven spring herbs consumed on the seventh day of the first month. This tradition highlights Japan's rich culinary heritage and reverence for seasonal ingredients. Accompanying this visual feast are five poems that further enhance our appreciation for these crustaceans and molluscs. Each verse serves as an ode to their unique flavors and textures, inviting us to savor their essence through both sight and taste. Attributed to Ryuryukyo Shinsai during the early 19th century in Japan, this paper color woodcut exemplifies the mastery of traditional Japanese artistry. The use of vibrant colors brings life to each component depicted within its modest dimensions (203 mm x 278 mm). As we admire this remarkable piece from afar, let us not forget its historical context and cultural significance. While appreciating its beauty is encouraged, any commercial use should be refrained from so that future generations can also revel in its splendor.
