EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and historical significance of Persepolis, Iran. The palace terrace complex, once the capital of the Achaemenid Empire established by Darius I in 518 BCE, stands as a testament to ancient Persian civilization. Drawing inspiration from Assyrian and Babylonian palaces, successive great kings added various elements to create an architectural masterpiece. The vertical aerial perspective allows us to appreciate the vastness and intricacy of this world heritage site. From above, we can see the sprawling terraces adorned with majestic columns and intricate carvings that were once bustling with life. Each element tells a story of power, wealth, and cultural exchange during one of history's most influential empires. However, this magnificent complex met its tragic end when Alexander the Great allegedly set it ablaze after his conquest in 330 BCE. Despite its destruction centuries ago, Persepolis continues to captivate our imagination as we marvel at its remnants. Preserved through time by Historic England Archive's remarkable collection, this Aerofilms Ltd. 's photograph taken in the 1950s transports us back in time. It serves as a reminder of humanity's ability to create awe-inspiring structures while also highlighting their vulnerability against forces beyond our control.
