EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "Woman and Child, Nunivak" by Edward Sheriff Curtis, captures a tender moment between a mother and her young son, Joe Moses, on the island of Nunivak, Alaska, circa 1929. The image is a poignant representation of the close bond between parent and child and the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Alaska. The mother, dressed in traditional Eskimo clothing, carries her son on her back as they traverse the rugged terrain of the island. The child, bundled up against the cold, gazes intently at the camera with a curious expression. The photograph is a beautiful example of Curtis's masterful use of light and shadow, and his ability to capture the essence of a moment in time. This image was taken during Curtis's extensive documentation of Native American and Alaska Native cultures, which resulted in his influential book, "The North American Indian." The photograph is a valuable addition to the Library of Congress's extensive collection of Curtis's work and serves as a reminder of the important role that photography plays in preserving the history and heritage of indigenous peoples.
