Sidi Mohammeds tent, captured by the French, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Sidi Mohammeds tent, captured by the French, 1844. One of the trophies taken by the French army from the Moors, ...the Tent of the eldest son of the Emperor [Muhammad IV of Morocco]. It was displayed in Paris: It required no less than forty mules to convey it from place to place. Above the first tent rises a second, and much larger one, whichserves to shade the first from the rays of the sun. Both are surmounted by a large ball of gilt copper, which can be seen from a considerable distance. At the entrance of the tent, and on one side of it, are a number of arches, or rather niches, which served as shelter for the guards of the gate. The tent was surrounded at some distance by a kind of wall, also of white linen, which prevented anyone seeing or hearing from the outside what passed in the royal presence. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sidi Mohammed's tent, a remarkable piece of history captured by the French in 1844. The creator of this image remains unknown, but its significance is undeniable. Once belonging to the eldest son of Emperor Muhammad IV of Morocco, this grand tent was one among many trophies seized by the French army from the Moors. Displayed proudly in Paris, it required an impressive convoy of forty mules to transport it from place to place. The photograph reveals two tents - the first sheltered beneath a larger one that shields it from the sun's rays. Both structures are crowned with a magnificent ball made of gilt copper, visible even from afar. At the entrance and on one side of the tent stand arches or niches providing protection for guards stationed at its gate. Surrounding this regal dwelling is a wall constructed using white linen fabric, ensuring utmost privacy for those within. The image offers us a glimpse into an era long gone, where power dynamics between nations played out through acts such as capturing prized possessions like Sidi Mohammed's tent. It serves as a testament to both Moroccan culture and European conquests during this turbulent period in history. Preserved within these monochrome lines lies not only an exquisite architectural marvel but also echoes of political strife and cultural exchange between France and Morocco during their shared past.
