EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 18th century portrait, titled "Portrait of a Grenadier Holding a Ticket in His Hand," was painted by the French artist E Lussigny around the year 1791. The Grenadier, a member of the elite infantry unit of the French military, is depicted in his full regalia, including a bearskin hat and a red coat adorned with gold buttons and braid. The Grenadier's direct gaze and strong posture convey a sense of pride and confidence. The intriguing addition to this portrait is the Grenadier's hand, which holds a small, ornate ticket. The significance of the ticket is unclear, but it may be a pass or permit, indicating that the Grenadier was on official military business or attending a formal event. The painting is an oil on canvas work, measuring approximately 51 x 41 cm, and is currently housed in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, one of the city's most esteemed museums dedicated to the history of Paris and France. The rich colors and fine details of the Grenadier's uniform and the textured canvas material bring the portrait to life, transporting us back to the eighteenth century and offering a glimpse into the fashion and heritage of the time. The portrait's composition and the Grenadier's strong, confident gaze also make it a captivating work of art, inviting the viewer to look deeper into the subject's story and the historical context of the time. Overall, "Portrait of a Grenadier Holding a Ticket in His Hand" is a striking representation of French military history and a testament to the artistic skill of E Lussigny.
