In this print from 1911, we witness the iconic moment when King Arthur beseeches the Lady of the Lake for the legendary sword Excalibur. Created by renowned artist Walter Crane, this masterpiece beautifully captures the essence of Arthurian legend and medieval chivalry. Sir Baldwin and his loyal steed stand nearby as witnesses to this pivotal event. The stroke Dolorous is evident in their expressions, reflecting both anticipation and awe. The Lady of the Lake, a majestic figure with her regal attire and serene countenance, holds Excalibur aloft in her delicate hand. Excalibur itself shimmers with an otherworldly glow, promising to safeguard Arthur throughout his noble quest. This mystical weapon symbolizes not only power but also honor and righteousness. The surrounding landscape showcases England's natural beauty, with a tranquil lake where swans gracefully glide upon its calm waters. A small boat rests nearby as a means of transportation across these enchanting realms. This artwork originates from Henry Gilbert's first edition book "Stories of the Knights of the Round Table" adding further historical significance to its depiction.
