CHICAGO - TRAFFIC, 1909 - A Glimpse into the Bustling Streets of Old Chicago
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph captures the chaos and energy that defined the cityscape of early 20th century Chicago. Taken in 1909 by Frank M. Hallenbeck, it offers a rare glimpse into the congested traffic on Dearborn Street, one of Chicago's busiest thoroughfares at the time. Looking southward from the intersection with Randolph Street, this snapshot showcases a bustling scene filled with horse-drawn carts, trams, and wagons navigating through a sea of pedestrians. The sepia-toned image evokes a sense of nostalgia for turn-of-the-century urban life. The storefronts lining both sides of Dearborn Street are adorned with signs advertising various businesses such as Koester's store and Cunard Line travel agency. Telegraph wires crisscross above while telephone lines stretch along the street corners, showcasing technological advancements amidst this chaotic scene. As we observe this historical moment frozen in time, we can almost hear the clatter of hooves on cobblestone streets and feel the palpable excitement emanating from every corner. This photograph serves as a testament to Chicago's rapid growth during this era – transforming from a small trading post to an industrial powerhouse. Intriguingly capturing an ordinary day in downtown Chicago over a century ago, this print allows us to reflect upon how much has changed while appreciating our connection to history
