EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the golden age of silent films, specifically to the set of "Old Heidelberg" in 1927. The image showcases three iconic figures from that era: director Ernest Lubitsch, along with actors Ramon Novarro and Jean Hersholt. In this particular scene, we see the trio engaged in a momentary respite from their work, indulging in a shared passion - smoking cigarettes. As they take a break between scenes, their camaraderie is evident through their relaxed postures and friendly expressions. The photograph captures not only the essence of early American cinema but also highlights the influence of German filmmaking on Hollywood during that time. Lubitsch's presence as both director and actor underscores his significant contributions to shaping silent movies. Moreover, this image serves as a reminder of how smoking was once considered an integral part of social interactions and relaxation for many individuals. It offers us a glimpse into a bygone era when smoking was more widely accepted. Preserved by The Granger Collection in New York, this print allows us to appreciate the artistry behind silent films while reflecting on societal shifts regarding smoking habits over time.
