EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captured by Walker Evans in February 1937 depicts a poignant scene during the Great Flood of 1937 in Forrest City, Arkansas. The image showcases African American flood refugees patiently waiting in line at mealtime outside a temporary infirmary operated by the Red Cross. The devastating flood had left these individuals homeless and vulnerable, seeking refuge and sustenance from charitable organizations. The composition of the photo is striking; it portrays a group of men and women wearing worn-out coats and denim overalls, their tired faces reflecting the hardships they have endured. Their feet are covered with mud-stained shoes, symbolizing their struggle to navigate through this disaster-ridden landscape. Evans' lens captures not only their physical appearances but also conveys their resilience amidst adversity. Each person carries an empty pail, signifying both hope for nourishment as well as dependence on relief efforts for survival. This photograph serves as a reminder of the profound impact that natural disasters can have on marginalized communities during times of economic hardship such as the Great Depression. It also highlights the vital role played by organizations like the Red Cross in providing aid to those most affected. Decades later, this image continues to evoke empathy and understanding towards those who face displacement due to environmental catastrophes or other crises.
