EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Richard Lynch Garner, an American naturalist who dedicated his life to studying the language and behavior of primates. In this image, taken in 1894 near the Ogawaii River in central Africa, Garner is seen alongside a chimpanzee. Garner's passion for understanding our closest relatives led him deep into the heart of the African jungle. Equipped with his trusty rifle and accompanied by a native assistant, he braved the challenges of the tropical environment to unravel the mysteries of primate communication. His impressive handlebar mustache adds an air of sophistication to his rugged appearance as he stands tall among lush vegetation. The late 19th century was a turning point for scientific exploration, and Garner played a significant role in expanding our knowledge about these fascinating creatures. The presence of a young black boy by Garner's side highlights not only their partnership but also speaks volumes about collaboration across cultures during that era. This drawing serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and human connection. As we gaze upon this historical artwork today, we are reminded of Garner's pioneering spirit and dedication to unlocking nature's secrets. It is through individuals like him that we continue to deepen our understanding of wildlife and appreciate their place within our world.
