MILLING GRAIN, 1568
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating woodcut print by Jost Amman that offers us a glimpse into the daily life of a medieval miller. In this intricately detailed artwork, we are transported back to the year 1568, where we witness the laborious process of milling grain. The central figure in the composition is the miller himself, depicted with great attention to detail and realism. He stands beside his gristmill, pouring sacks of grain into its mechanism. The sheer physical effort required for this task is evident as he strains against the weight of the sack. A donkey patiently waits nearby, ready to transport more supplies or perhaps take part in turning the treadmill. Amidst this bustling scene, other men can be seen engaged in various tasks related to milling grain. Some are busy handling hay or tending to other aspects of running a mill. The interior setting adds an authentic touch to this woodcut print while emphasizing the working class nature of their occupation. Jost Amman's skillful use of calligraphy and typeface further enhances our appreciation for this historical artwork. Through his meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, he transports us back in time and allows us to witness firsthand an essential aspect of medieval life - grinding grain for sustenance. This remarkable piece serves as both a visual record and a testament to the hard work and dedication exhibited by workers like these millers during that era.
