Slow-But Not Sure - A Satirical Take on Germany's Colonial Ambitions in Africa
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This 1889 cartoon by Sir John Tenniel, titled "Slow-But Not Sure" offers a biting commentary on Germany's colonial efforts in Africa. With his signature wit and artistic skill, Tenniel presents a scene set deep within the African jungle that is both humorous and thought-provoking. The central figure of the cartoon is an Englishman named John Bull, representing England itself. Dressed in safari attire with a pith helmet and rifle slung over his shoulder, he wades through a swamp alongside Otto von Bismarck, the German Chancellor at the time. The two men are accompanied by their faithful hunting dogs as they navigate the treacherous terrain. Tenniel cleverly portrays Germany as slow to catch up with other European powers engaging in colonial expansion. The exaggerated stereotypes depicted here highlight this notion; Bismarck appears hesitant and unsure while struggling to keep up with John Bull's confident stride. Through this satirical lens, Tenniel challenges notions of power dynamics between nations during the era of colonialism. This print serves as a reminder of how political cartoons can be powerful tools for social commentary even today - provoking reflection on historical events and prompting discussions about imperialism and its lasting impact on Africa.
