EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, FLPA/Steve Trewhella brings us a mesmerizing glimpse of the underwater world along the rocky shores of Bude, Cornwall. As low tide exposes the rugged terrain, an enchanting sight awaits - a thriving community of Honeycomb Worms (Sabellaria alveolata) proudly displaying their intricate tube reef colony. Like a bustling metropolis on the ocean floor, these European groupies have created a masterpiece with their tubular abodes. With each worm contributing to the construction and maintenance of their shared dwelling, it's no wonder they've become Britain's rock stars! Against the backdrop of Atlantic waves crashing nearby, these polychaete worms showcase their remarkable adaptability to life in temperate waters. Their segmented bodies wiggle through crevices and cling onto rocks like true coastal daredevils. As autumn sets in and English sea breezes bring a refreshing chill to Cornwall, this vibrant display reminds us that even in colder climates, marine life thrives. These hardy creatures defy expectations as they form colonies that not only protect them from predators but also create vital habitats for other marine species. So next time you find yourself strolling along Cornish shores at low tide, keep your eyes peeled for these incredible honeycomb-like structures! They serve as a reminder that beneath our feet lies an entire universe teeming with wild and wondrous life just waiting to be discovered
