Human head louse, LM
Human head louse, Light microraph (LM) 0f Pediculus humanus capitis. P. humanus is divided into two subspecies; the head louse P. humanus capitis and the body louse P. humanus corporis. The body louse lives in clothing and only moves onto the skin to eat, whereas the head louse is restricted to the hair of the head. Despite this difference in habitat, the two lice differ only slightly in shape and are capable of interbreeding. Head lice glue their eggs (nits) to hairs, while the body louse mainly uses the folds of the seams in clothing. Magnification: x25 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Human head louse, captured under a light microscope. The image reveals the fascinating world of Pediculus humanus capitis, one of two subspecies that make up P. humanus. While its counterpart, the body louse, resides in clothing and ventures onto the skin only for nourishment, this particular species is confined to the hair on our heads. Despite their contrasting habitats, these two lice exhibit striking similarities in shape and possess an astonishing ability to interbreed. Head lice are known for attaching their eggs, commonly referred to as nits, firmly onto individual hairs with a special glue-like substance. On the other hand, the body louse primarily utilizes clothing seams as nesting grounds. The magnification level employed in capturing this image allows us to appreciate every minute detail of this minuscule creature at 25 times its actual size when printed at 10cm wide. This horizontal photograph not only appeals to scientific enthusiasts but also serves as a testament to nature's intricate designs. Photographed by STEVE GSCHMEISSNER/SCIENCE PHOTO and available through Fine Art Storehouse, this stunning piece offers an opportunity to explore biology's wonders while adding a touch of scientific elegance to any space it graces.
