EDITORS COMMENTS
This steel engraving, published in 1861, takes us on a visual journey to ancient Italy circa 450 BC. The print showcases the vast territory of Italy during that time, accompanied by separate maps highlighting significant locations such as Rome, Roman Forum, Syracuse, Carthage, Pompeii and Naples. With its intricate details and hand-colored borderlines, this engraved image offers a glimpse into the rich Italian culture of the past. The legend accompanying the maps is written in Latin language, adding an air of authenticity to this historical piece. From Etruscan influences to Roman landmarks like the iconic Colosseum and Roman Forum, every corner of ancient Italy is beautifully depicted in this vertical composition. As we explore further within the frame's boundaries, our eyes wander across Sicily's enchanting landscapes and Corsica's rugged beauty. Sardinia emerges with its own distinct charm while Gaul looms large on the map as a testament to ancient territorial divisions. Transporting us back through time without any human presence captured within its borders allows us to focus solely on these remarkable travel destinations frozen in history. This international landmark serves as a reminder of how far we have come while celebrating Italian heritage and French cultural connections.
