EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Henri of Artois (1820-1883), the duke of Bordeaux and count of Chambord, who was the grandson of French king Charles X. Henri was destined to succeed his grandfather as king, but he was ultimately replaced by Louis Philippe. The image, taken by Angerer in Vienne during the 19th century, showcases Henri's regal presence and dignified demeanor.
Henri's life story is one filled with political intrigue and royal aspirations that were never fully realized. Despite being groomed for leadership from a young age, circumstances beyond his control led to his ultimate disappointment in not ascending to the throne.
In this portrait, Henri exudes a sense of nobility and grace befitting his royal lineage. His piercing gaze hints at the weight of responsibility he carried as a potential future monarch.
Through this photo print, we are given a glimpse into the turbulent world of 19th-century European politics and the personal struggles faced by those caught up in its machinations. Henri's legacy may have been overshadowed by historical events, but images like these serve as reminders of a time when dynasties rose and fell on the whims of fate.
