The Lost Sheep, 1864 (oil on canvas)

5242122 The Lost Sheep, 1864 (oil on canvas) by Webbe or Webb, William J. (1831-1904); 33.1x25.1 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: The isolated figure of a shepherd carrying a sheep over his shoulders, walking along the ridge of a rocky mountain. The shepherd is depicted as a bearded middle-aged man carrying a staff, with his head tilted slightly to the left revealing a Middle-Eastern face, his eyelids lowered in order to glance at the sheep, and wearing a red turban and long, striped robes worn with an overcoat. Growing to the right of the figure, within the barren landscape, is a tall thistle with pronounced thorns. The entire scene is bathed in the warm, red glow characteristic of evening light. To the left of the figure, the mountain appears to fall away sharply with the ridge curving round in an arc to the left. On the right horizon are the peaks of more distant mountains depicted in pink and mauve tones. The sky is yellow with streaks of pink, orange and blue cloud on the horizon. The gilt wooden frame has two friezes with a textured gesso finish, separated by plain beading. There are four decorative ovals on the inner frieze, at the centre of each side. The slip frame is gilt wood with rounded sight corners.); © Manchester Art Gallery

The Lost Sheep

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting created by William J. Webbe or Webb in 1864. This stunning artwork, measuring 33.1x25.1 cm, can be found at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. The focal point of this piece is an isolated figure of a shepherd walking along the ridge of a rocky mountain, carrying a sheep over his shoulders. The shepherd, depicted as a bearded middle-aged man with a Middle-Eastern face and wearing traditional attire including a red turban and long striped robes, gazes down at the sheep with lowered eyelids. The barren landscape surrounding them features a tall thistle with pronounced thorns growing to the right of the figure. The entire scene is bathed in warm evening light, casting a mesmerizing red glow over everything. To the left of the figure, the mountain sharply falls away while curving around in an arc to the left. On the right horizon, distant mountains painted in pink and mauve tones add depth to the composition. The sky above showcases streaks of yellow, pink, orange, and blue clouds near its horizon. This remarkable artwork is housed within an exquisite gilt wooden frame adorned with textured gesso finish and decorative ovals on each side's center frieze. The slip frame complements it beautifully with rounded sight corners. "The Lost Sheep" captures both natural beauty and human connection through its masterful depiction of landscape and emotion—a testament to William J. Webb's artistic prowess that continues to captivate viewers at Manchester Art Gallery today.
