EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving by John Kay depicts the renowned Scottish social philosopher and economist, Adam Smith. The print showcases a full-length portrait of Smith, capturing his intellectual presence and profound influence on political economics during the Scottish Enlightenment. Smith, born in 1723 and passing away in 1790, is best known as the author of "The Wealth of Nations" published in 1776. This groundbreaking work revolutionized economic theory and laid the foundation for modern capitalism. In this image, he exudes an air of wisdom and contemplation befitting his status as one of history's most influential thinkers. Set within an elegant interior study, Smith is depicted wearing a hat while leaning on a walking stick or cane. These subtle details hint at both his scholarly pursuits and refined taste typical of Georgian society. Preserved within a private collection, this engraving offers viewers a glimpse into the life and legacy of Adam Smith. It serves as a powerful reminder that ideas have the potential to shape societies long after their creators have departed.
