EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Roman Hunt" takes us back to ancient times, specifically the Roman Empire in North Africa. Plate 10 from the collection "Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium (Of Hunting: Wild Beasts, Birds, Fish)" engraved by Jan Collaert and published by Phillipus Gallaeus of Amsterdam in the 17th century. The scene depicts a thrilling hunt unfolding under the cover of darkness. The hunters are armed with flaming torches that cast an eerie glow on their surroundings. They skillfully employ various trapping techniques to capture wild animals such as lions. A palm tree stands tall in the background, adding an exotic touch to this dramatic illustration. However, amidst its artistic beauty lies a darker theme - animal cruelty. The trapped animals symbolize both the power and dominance of the Romans over nature but also raise questions about ethics and compassion towards these magnificent creatures. Jan van der Straet's meticulous engraving technique brings every detail to life in this stunning piece from his series. The composition captures not only the action-packed moment but also showcases Van der Straet's mastery at conveying emotions through art. This hand-colored engraving is now part of a private collection known as The Stapleton Collection and serves as a reminder of our fascination with history and our ongoing exploration into humanity's relationship with nature throughout different eras.
