EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Leopold II, the King of the Belgians, during the 19th century. The image showcases his regal presence and distinguished features, including a magnificent beard that adds to his commanding aura. As one of Belgium's most influential monarchs, Leopold II played a significant role in shaping the country's history. The print captures an important aspect of Leopold II's reign - his involvement in colonialism. Known for establishing and exploiting colonies in Africa, particularly Congo, this engraving serves as a reminder of Belgium's complex relationship with its former colonies. Le Petit Parisien (Supplement Litteraire Illustre) featured this illustration on October 6th, 1895. Its inclusion in such a prominent publication highlights Leopold II's significance not only within Belgium but also on an international scale. The digital cleaning has restored the image to its original glory, allowing us to appreciate every intricate detail meticulously engraved by French artists from the 19th century. This particular print is part of a private collection and is now made accessible through Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform. As we gaze upon this portrait today, it prompts reflection on European monarchy and colonial legacies while offering insight into Belgian history and identity. It stands as both a testament to Leopold II's power and influence as well as an opportunity for critical examination of past actions and their consequences.
