EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful and revered figure of Menelik II, the negus (king) of Ethiopia during the late 19th century. The image captures a momentous event in Ethiopian history - his victory at the Battle of Adua in 1896 against Italian colonial troops. The engraving, featured in "Le petit journal" on August 28th, 1898, is part of the Selva Collection by Fortune Louis Meaulle. It portrays Menelik II as a symbol of resistance and triumph against European colonialism. Menelik II's reign marked a significant period for Ethiopia as he successfully defended his country's independence from Italian aggression. This historic battle not only secured Ethiopia's sovereignty but also inspired other African nations fighting for their freedom. Leonard de Selva beautifully captures this historical moment through his lens, preserving it for future generations to admire and learn from. His photograph encapsulates both the strength and dignity exuded by Menelik II as he led his people to victory. This artwork serves as a reminder of Africa's rich history and its resilience against foreign domination. It highlights an important chapter in Ethiopian history while shedding light on broader themes such as imperialism, nationalism, and cultural identity.
