EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "John McClellan (litho)" showcases the work of an English School artist from the 19th century. The image, part of a private collection, depicts John McClellan, a prominent figure in the chemical industry during that era. The lithograph was created as an illustration for D W F Hardie's book "A History of the Chemical Industry in Widnes" published by Imperial Chemicals Ltd in 1950. The photograph captures McClellan surrounded by various elements related to his profession, such as linen, chemicals, and industrial equipment. Standing on Parliament Street in Liverpool, England, he is depicted as a successful merchant and chemist who played a significant role in shaping Britain's chemical industry. McClellan's contributions include his involvement with notable companies like North British Chemical Company and ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries). His expertise extended to salts, drysalter products, alkali production methods, borax refining techniques imported from Germany and Europe at large. This print not only celebrates John McClellan but also highlights the importance of chemistry within Britain's industrial landscape. It serves as a reminder of how individuals like him paved the way for advancements in science and commerce during this transformative period.
