EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Scottish Penny commemorating the renowned Adam Smith, dating back to 1797. Crafted from copper, this historical artifact was created by the skilled hands of an anonymous artist from the 18th century Scottish School. The reverse side of the coin features a representation of Smith's magnum opus, "The Wealth of Nations" symbolizing his groundbreaking contributions to political economy. On the obverse side, a bust portrait of Adam Smith himself graces the coin, paying homage to this influential figure in Scotland's history. As one of Scotland's most esteemed social philosophers and pioneers in his field, Smith revolutionized economic thought with his theories on industry and wealth creation. The intricate relief design on this penny depicts various tools and symbols associated with agriculture and industry. A ship represents trade and commerce while a plough and spinning wheel signify agricultural productivity. This imagery serves as a testament to Smith's belief that these sectors were crucial for national prosperity. With its rich historical significance and detailed craftsmanship, this copper Scottish Penny offers us a glimpse into both monetary history and intellectual achievement during the Scottish Enlightenment era. Preserved within private collections today, it stands as an enduring tribute to Adam Smith's lasting impact on economics and society at large.
