EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases Thomas Sackville, the 1st Earl of Dorset, in all his regal splendor. Painted by John de Critz in oil on panel, this exquisite artwork is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Flemish painter. Sackville's commanding presence is evident as he gazes confidently at the viewer. His ornate attire reflects his status as a prominent statesman and politician during the Elizabethan era. The fur-lined hat atop his head adds an air of sophistication, while gilded chains adorn his neck, symbolizing wealth and power. The intricate inscription board beneath him further emphasizes Sackville's importance and achievements. With a well-groomed beard framing his face, he exudes wisdom and authority befitting a chancellor of the University of Oxford. Surrounded by an elaborate gold frame with decorative elements typical of Tudor-era design, this portrait captures both the essence of its subject and the artistic style prevalent during that time period. As Lord Treasurer, poet, dramatist, and influential figure in society, Thomas Sackville left an indelible mark on history. This painting serves as a timeless reminder of his significant contributions to academia and politics alike. Courtesy of New College at Oxford University's collection, this remarkable print allows us to appreciate not only Sackville's legacy but also the talent behind its creation.
