The Barbary Macaque (Cercopithecidae) is a species of Old World monkey found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco, and is one of the best-known primates due to its wide distribution and distinctive features, greyish-brown coat with lighter fur on its face, hands, feet, and tail. Its diet consists mainly of fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers and insects. It lives in groups ranging from five to thirty individuals which are led by an alpha male, and are highly social animals that communicate through vocalizations and facial expressions. They also have a complex system for grooming each other which helps maintain social bonds within the group. The Barbary Macaque is listed as endangered due to habitat loss caused by deforestation for agriculture as well as hunting for food or sport.
