EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed handcoloured steel engraving depicts a Barbary Ape, also known as the Barbary Macaque or the Gibraltar Ape (Macaca sylvanus), an endangered primate native to the northwestern Africa region. The image, taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Monkeys, published in Edinburgh in 1844, was illustrated by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars. The Barbary Ape is a distinctive Old World monkey species, with a thick, dark coat, long, bushy tail, and prominent cheek pads. They are social animals, living in large troops that can number up to 150 individuals. Their habitat includes rocky, forested areas, cliffs, and ravines. Unfortunately, this species is currently endangered due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting for bushmeat and the pet trade. Their population is estimated to be around 8,000 individuals, with the largest population living in Morocco. The Barbary Ape is an important cultural symbol in North Africa, and is often associated with strength, fertility, and good luck. In the past, they were also kept as pets by European travelers, leading to their introduction to Europe and the establishment of colonies in places like Gibraltar and Sicily. This beautiful engraving not only serves as a reminder of the natural beauty and diversity of the Barbary Ape, but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect this fascinating and endangered primate species.
