Serpent Star Collection

Serpent stars, also known as brittle stars, are echinoderms belonging to the Ophiuroidea class. They have a star-shaped body and five long, slender arms that can reach up to 60 cm in length. These animals live on the ocean floor and feed on small organisms like plankton and detritus. They use their arms to move around and capture prey. Their bodies are covered in spines which help them defend against predators. Serpent stars come in a variety of colors including red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. They reproduce by releasing eggs into the water column where they develop into larvae before settling onto the seafloor as adults, and are an important part of marine ecosystems as they provide food for other animals such as fish and sea urchins while also helping to keep sediment stirred up for nutrient cycling purposes.
