Northern basket star (Gorgonocephalus eucnemis)
Northern basket star (Gorgonocephalus eucnemis), has arms with miniature hooks and spies that hold and manipulate food particles. Here it is positioned in an exposed spot, feeding by spreading the arms across the current, twisting and coiling and looking like a moving shrub. The arms may be 70 cm long. The fish is safe; the basket star's prey are small creatures. Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, Japan
