African Spoonbill Collection

The African Spoonbill is a large wading bird found in wetlands and shallow lakes across much of Africa and has a distinctive spoon-shaped bill, which it uses to filter food from the water. The African Spoonbill is mostly white with black tips on its wings and tail, and yellow legs. Its long neck helps it reach into deeper waters for food. It feeds mainly on small fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs and other aquatic creatures. During breeding season the African Spoonbill builds a large nest of sticks in trees near water sources or on islands in lakes or rivers. Both parents share the responsibility of incubating eggs and caring for young chicks until they are ready to leave the nest after about two months, and are vulnerable to habitat loss due to human activities such as draining wetlands for agriculture or development projects, but their population is currently stable overall.
