Giants Refreshed, BR poster, 1947

Poster produced for British Railways showing men maintaining locomotives at the Doncaster works, Yorkshire. Two workers are painting the Sir Ronald Matthews locomotive while others are replacing the name plate on the Owen Tudor locomotive. To prepare for this painting the artist was invited to the Doncaster works where he made preparatory sketches of the Sir Reginald Mathews locomotive. Artwork by Terence Cuneo, son of the artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo. He studied at the Chelsea and Slade Art Schools and in addition to a long career designing railway posters, he also painted portraits (including royal portraits) and ceremonial and military subjects

Image of the green flash effect Featured 9 Jun 2003 Print

Image of the green flash effect

The green flash. Time-lapse photograph of the green flash, an elusive effect visible at sunset for a few seconds when the last portion of the solar disc goes beneath the horizon. The green flash is caused by the atmospheric refraction of the sunlight. The refraction is larger for green and blue light than for red light and this means that the image of the Sun viewed in green light will appear to be slightly higher above the horizon than the image in red. When the upper part of the red image approaches the horizon the green flash may be seen as a sudden change in colour from yellow (bottom image) to green. Sometimes a final violet-blue flash is also seen
