Durham, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the ancient city of Durham. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963), who was commissioned in 1930 to design four ceiling paintings for the Underwriting Room at Lloyd's and murals for Reed's Lacquer Room. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries and worked for LNER, London Transport and several shipping companies. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 635 mm

Tynemouth, LNER poster, 1926

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail services to the coastal town of Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear. The poster shows two women and a man looking out over the seaside from a high incline. This poster was produced just before the General Strike in 1926. Economically, this was a bad year for the railways, especially the LNER. It was said afterwards that the publicity of 1926 had been the only bright feature for the railway. Artwork by Alfred Lambert (1902-1970), who studied art at the Allan-Frazer Art College in Arbroathy. He designed posters for LNER and London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and illustrated books

The belt comprises the three bright stars (from left to right) Alnitak (Zeta Orionis), Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis) and Mintaka (Delta Orionis). Orion is a large and prominent constellation that straddles the celestial equator, making it equally visible from the northern and southern hemispheres
