Wind turbines at power station, Hawaii

Power from the wind. View of wind turbines in an electricity generating wind farm'. One of the leading forms of alternative energy, wind power creates no emissions to threaten the environment. Wind power is, however, subject to the vagaries of the weather, so is best viewed as a means of reducing dependence on fossil fuel or nuclear power generation, rather than a direct replacement. Wind power is fairly capital- intensive, but has relatively low running costs. The main environmental problem is that of noise, both from the rotating blades and the whine from the generators. Photographed in Hawaii

Jets of particles from matter/antimatter collision Featured 7 Oct 2002 Print

Jets of particles from matter/antimatter collision

Matter/antimatter particle collision. Computer display of jets of particles created when matter and antimatter collide & annihilate in a particle accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The display shows an event in which two quarks have collided & annihilated into pure energy, rematerialising as two new quarks which in turn decay into two high-energy jets (blue & purple tracks) of hadronic matter such as pions. The display also shows the yellow & green tracks of lower energy particles produced in the event. The red outline shows the UA1 detector, which is the size of a 3-storey house, in which the collision occurred. (Run 7265, Event 697)
