Heart Featured 22 Oct 2001 Image

Heart and glowing light, computer artwork. The heart (red) is a hollow sac of muscular tissue that pumps blood around the body. The aorta (large artery, upper left of heart) carries blood to the body. Three smaller arteries are seen branching off it. To the left of the aorta is part of the vena cava vein (the upper section). This vein carries deoxygenated blood into the heart from the body. This blood then travels from the heart to the lungs (where it obtains oxygen) and back to the heart through the pulmonary blood vessels (upper right of heart). The oxygenated blood is then pumped into the aorta and around the body

Red Sea from space

Arabian Peninsula (right) and the Red Sea (left) from space. At centre left, between two fingers of the Red Sea, is the Sinai Peninsula, part of Egypt. The majority of the Arabian Peninsula is taken up by Saudi Arabia. This area is largely covered in desert (orange) and mountains (brown). Above the Sinai Peninsula is the Mediterranean Sea. Photographed from the Space Shuttle Columbia during mission STS-40 in June 1991
